Pup . . . . . .

his birthday
is not important
to me

no
it is the day
he died
the day he
left
me behind
the day
I watched
the tide
gently
carry him
away
take his spirit
out to sea
and
still I see him
along the beach
my big wooly
Pup
my dark dog
my big
black Pup
I miss your bark
I miss your breath
I miss your play
I miss my
soul mate
everyday

so I say
to my Pup
never set
me free

I endure
my pain
one that
is so
deep
within
for it is all
that I
have left of
you

until
we meet again
I will pretend
that I hold
you close
and
watch you run
along
the beach
as we used
to do
pretend
we still
snuggle close
as I
nuzzle you

I guess that this is an “unbirthday poem.” It is what came to me for Poet’s United “Birthday Poem.” I know just how much Sherry misses Pup. He was/is the love of her life. I grew up with horses, cats and dogs. I love my animals. I have never been without a cat. Before David came into my life, Max was my great love. He was Siamese and devilish. But what a love – we were inseparable. Sherry writes about Pup today. Her poem is haunting and painful and can be found .

This poem is linked to Poetry United’s Mid Week Motif’s Birthday Poems.

Jack & Paggy

IMG_0047
A poem with two perspectives upon the same thing, from Mary at dVerse. In essence the the first perspective of this poem represents me. The second really represents David as he walks the dogs. However, I just speak from the first person. Jack is our black dog, getting old now, pushing 13. Patty – having become Paggy is still full of vim and vigor at about 5 years of age. They are each rescue dogs.

I open the door
downstairs
mid-day
Two furry noses
greet me in their
special way
Wet and wooly
they emit nothing
but love
Each snuggles under
a different hand
This is true
friendship
pure
Never would either
stray or
leave me
for another
It was always
love at first site
And it would
forever remain
that way

Yet on this
cold
and windy night
the snow
drifting but light
I would question
is my love
as deep and
as pure
as without question
as theirs
as I put on
his collar
and grapple with
leashes
reaching under
her belly
to fit her harness
knowing
that in a
minute
out there I
would be
struggling against
the wind and
the snow
My scarf
becoming
a frozen maul
as it scratches
my face
and scraping now
frozen skin
I ask myself
Is it really worth it
These two mutts
Why did I get
them
rescue them
why
They are nothing
but work
nothing
but trouble
Who wants to
be out in the
in the snow
on a night
like this
grappling with
two lunging
dogs
as they play
pulling
you this way
and that

Oh Girlie

pearl the squirrel

Pearl grew out of a need to NOT be SERIOUS! Pearl is VERY silly!

pearl
the squirrel
loves her
nuts
we speak
not of her
leaf
food
but
of
her nuts
for those she
likes to bury

IMG_0788

then again
pearl
the squirrel
considered her
friends
to be nuts
absolutely
crackers

IMG_0785

her friends
unlike
herself
lived behind glass
she wished
them free
she taunted them
believing that
if she wiggled
enough

IMG_0782

she might just
get one
to bat at
that glass
hard enough to
bounce
it
out
or
pounce it
out
at the
moment
she sees
only
itty bitty
come
out
itty bitty
she says
knowing
she won’t

IMG_0780

but wait a minute
say …
just a minute
there
are
two of
you
my two
friends

IMG_0774

pearl cannot
handle two
cats

no

so back
up
pearl
just back
up
then
jump
like a
mouse
into
the drain
where
last nights
rain
shall act
as a train
or perhaps
i can
catch the
next
leaf boat
and i’ll
swirl
away fast
from the two
of
you
U
naughty
cats

i know that
they thought
that
they
had
had me
and itty bitty did
until
she was
joined by
boy-boy
shameful
big
bully
boy-Boy

IMG_0789

pearl is a
very
smart
squirrel
safe
now
to
taunt
those naughty
kitties

the bear

Oh how delightful is the artwork of Catrin Welz-Stein Her lovely whimsical and fascinating work was the inspiration for poetry prompts at dVerse today. I simply could not resist her Polar Bear whom I have long, long loved … at one time a totem of mine.

i cannot pass you by
you have always been
a great love in my life

you are majestic
you are commanding
were we to lose you

i could easily die
die of loss even though
i don’t really know you

you are dreamlike
your hug is huge
your warmth real

but just a dream
you fade away
out of my picture

as long as you
can remain as long
as the water is cold

as long as
I know that you
are there

we that is all of us
we will go on
we will remain
